So far a lot of healthy eating advice has centered around individual nutrients, and this has led to the premise that there are ‘good’ foods and that there are ‘bad’ foods. However when we look at food in this way we fail to see the bigger picture that all foods are good for us in some way – a little bit of what you fancy does you good, but we may have lost sight of what ‘a little’ means.
Food and how it affects our health is much more than the sum of its nutrient parts. It should not only nourish our bodies with nutrients, but equally importantly should provide enjoyment. Healthy eating and living is striking a balance between the two.
This means taking into account all factors about food – not just what we eat (the nutrition part), but also how we eat (the enjoyment part), and our relationship to food.
Cooking ensures you are in control of what goes into your food and thus what you eat; eating mindfully ensures you enjoy every mouthful; even a bit of gardening, fishing or hunting ensures appreciation and respect for the ingredients. All together it means that quality will become more important than quantity, and automatically your physical health and mind is rewarded.
Sounds commonsense, and so it should, eating healthy is simply that.
My aim is to make healthy food and eating an enjoyable experience, whether you want to improve your health, or just cook good, tasty food in general.
